DAS Outdoor Club Championships 2018

The DAS Outdoor Championships were held on Sunday 16th September. The day was very windy, but the wind was behind the archers, which meant it was possible to shoot. Archers were encouraged to arrive early for a 1pm start - but this did not make allowance for the enthusiasm of our archers. As a result there was a queue of cars waiting for the gate to open at 12.30!

The field was set up and ready to go by 1 o’clock. We even had a tent on the equipment line, making it feel like an open tournament. 12 archers were on the shooting line for sighters. The round for the club championships is by tradition a Chicago. This round is an oddity in that it uses metric scoring and imperial distances. Two and a half dozen arrows are shot at each distance - 60yards, 50 yards and 40 yards. The juniors were shooting a Short Junior National round. Shooting progressed very quickly and we had soon completed the two longer distances. There was then a short break before the final distance. The whole event was extremely well marshalled by Tony Briard, who not only organised the day, but also took on the role of Field Captain. He received three resounding and well deserved cheers at the end of shooting.

The victors were as follows:

Gents Compound: Simon Axon

Gents Recurve Barebow: Steve Johnson

Gents Recurve: Andy Bishop

Ladies Recurve: Sandra Robinson

Junior Ladies Recurve: Emelia Hughes

Junior Ladies Recurve Barebow: Chloe Doody

Probably the closest competition of the day was for nearest the centre on the first scoring end. The measuring stick came out to separate Tim Joinson, Emelia Hughes and Simon Axon. Simon took the prize by a hairsbreadth.
